VHCC Upward Bound Awarded $1.35 Million

Post Date:06/15/2017 7:37 AM

Virginia Highlands Community College has been awarded $1.35 million to continue the Upward Bound Program that prepares eligible high school students for college.

The five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education will allow VHCC to provide instruction, tutoring, advising, college visits, career mentoring and assistance with college and financial aid applications for 65 eligible students. The program serves students at Chilhowie, Northwood, Holston, Patrick Henry, and Virginia high schools.

“The program provides tremendous opportunities for students to learn and grow,” said VHCC Upward Bound Director Leigh Ann Adams. “Our goal is to provide help and support that introduces them to the possibilities that exist after high school and help them successfully transition into college.”

The VHCC Upward Bound Program began in 1990 and serves low-income and first-generation students. In addition to a year-round component, the VHCC Program now includes a Summer Enrichment Program and a Summer Bridge Program that allows students to earn up to six hours of college credit the summer after high school graduation.

Forty students are currently enrolled in the Summer Enrichment Program on the VHCC campus. This year’s offerings include Musicology, Appalachian Studies, STEM, and Cultural Enrichment. The program is designed to introduce students to career opportunities and allow them to interact with students from other high schools.
