Dr. James Baker Appointed to Cyber Security Board
James Baker, assistant professor of Information Systems Technology at Virginia Highlands Community College, has been appointed to the newly formed Cyber Security Advisory Board created by Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
The committee is comprised of representatives from community colleges across the Commonwealth, business and industry leaders, federal government representatives, and manufacturer representatives from the cyber industry. The committee is charged with building and maintaining cyber training programs to meet employer needs. Members will examine current and emerging cyber threats, the skills required of IT staff members, and how existing training programs can be improved to accommodate all aspects of Virginia’s workforce.
VHCC joined the effort as part of its commitment to provide cyber security training to increase career opportunities for local students and attract new, high-tech jobs to our region.
The committee’s inaugural meeting was held Sept. 13 in Alexandria.
Baker holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University and has a vast array of experience in the IT field. He formerly worked at Vanderbilt University, Bell Laboratories, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Next Knowledge LLC. He joined VHCC in 2013 and currently teaches a wide variety of information technology courses. He also represents the Taylor District as a member of the Washington County Board of Supervisors.
