 Dennis Carter

 Education:

In addition to the courses he completed at VHCC from 1991 to 1993, Dr. Carter has a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary English from Emory & Henry College, a Special Education Certificate from UVa, and a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies from Virginia Tech, with a concentration in school improvement and turnaround.

Career:

A life-long educator in Smyth County Schools, Dr. Carter began his career as a special education instructional assistant then was promoted through the ranks to special education teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of curriculum and instruction, and assistant superintendent. He was appointed interim superintendent for a short time before being offered the role as Superintendent of Smyth County Schools in January 2017. He also has shared his expertise with others as an adjunct instructor of education for Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, and Emory & Henry College.

Awards &
Personal Life:

Dr. Carter and his wife, Amy, who is also a life-long educator for Smyth County, have two sons - Tanner, who is a student at Emory & Henry, and Spencer, who is a junior at Northwood High School. The Carters are active members of McCready United Methodist Church in Saltville.
