During the summer students are often trying to contact their faculty advisors for answers to questions. Many times they'll email in the hopes of getting answers quickly. However, students are often unaware that many faculty do not work during the summer and answers to email questions may not come as quickly as they wish. One easy solution to let students know of you unavailability is to turn on your Out of Office Assistant in Outlook. With a few quick steps you can post a message that will direct students to your division counselor or the summer faculty advisor (new this year!). To turn on your assistant, click on tools on the top navigation bar when you are in your email, choose out of office assistant, write an appropriate message and choose "I am currently out of the office", then click ok. Finally, make sure to turn the assistant off when you come back in August! This is a simple way to communicate your availability to your students.

An advisor serves as a facilitator and role model. However, there are limitations to an advisor’s responsibilities. An advisor: Cannot make decisions for an advisee, but can be a sympathetic listener and offer alternatives to consider. Cannot alter natural abilities of a student, but can encourage development of talents. Cannot change academic requirements or college policy. Cannot serve as a personal counselor, but can be a resource for referrals to appropriate professional personnel.
