Evaluate Student Motivation

Enhancing a student's motivation by capitalizing on good academic planning can be a very helpful strategy. While lack of motivation is generally recognized as the most common cause of poor academic performance, no clear cut methods to help a student achieve maximum motivation have been developed. Suggest strategies might include:

1. Matching courses early in the program to the student's academic strengths, interests and background.

2. Helping the student, when possible, have a chance to build on success rather than failure.

3. Challenging capable students to continue their efforts toward academic excellence.

4. Explaining the rewards of a strong academic program and good grades.

Advising Tip for Faculty from Faculty

Peoplesoft, and particularly the inquiry section that is now available to all faculty is an excellent resource for student advising.  If you were unable to attend the excellent presentation prepared by Tammy McCracken and presented by Charlene Eastridge, I suggest that you take advantage of the version that will be available soon on-line (www.vhcc.edu/star). In our session with Charlene, she carefully guided us through the steps you can take to use the student inquiry capability to find test results for students with recommendations for the math and English classes those students might be required to take.  Charlene also fielded endless hypothetical questions from faculty and skillfully showed us how to use Peoplesoft to our advantage in each instance.  We are truly fortunate at VHCC to have such dedicated, able and willing support staff for the important advising tasks we undertake. Take advantage of them!
