Ensuring Advisor Success: Mastering the Art of Advising through the First Year of Advising and Beyond

The Advising Syllabus

If you remember, we started working on the advising syllabi during the February in-service. Here is a tip to help you continue that work...

Many of us see students who come to our offices for an advising appointment having no real understanding of why they are there. This is really the extent of their knowledge of advising—they have nothing prepared for the meeting, but why would they? They do not know that they have any responsibility, and they may not understand the importance of their role in the advising relationship. The answer to this is to give our advisees a tool and a resource—an advising syllabus. By giving students a syllabus, we are preparing them, as well as inviting them, to join us in the process of their education and the decisions that go along with it.

There are several components that an advising syllabus should include in order to be fully effective and more closely match course syllabi:

  • an equivalent in format/content to other campus syllabi to adhere to a uniform and consistent layout
  • contact information that is unambiguous so that the student can contact the correct office or adviser
  • sections for required materials and expectations for advisees so that they will know how to be prepared for their appointments, as well as expectations of the adviser so students will know what they can expect and to what extent services will be provided
  • a concise definition or mission statement of advising, along with any additional learning outcomes promoted by the institution and supported through advising
  • goals and/or objectives listed clearly so the students can plan ahead for appointments, understand the purpose for them, and clearly see how advising can help them succeed
  • a schedule of important dates, milestones in the advisee's academic career, suggested times to see an adviser, and a listing of other resources
  • assignments (could be appropriate in some cases)

Advising Tip for Faculty from Faculty

If you are like me, you are starting to see students with requests to help them in the preparation of their Educational and Career Action Plan (pumpkin sheet).  We will also soon see students with questions about summer and fall classes that they may want to take.  The “Using PeopleSoft Version 8.9 for Advising” document prepared by Tammy McCracken and Charlene Eastridge is a great tool to help you navigate PeopleSoft to provide assistance to students.  If you go to the college website and click on Faculty and Staff you will see reference to the QEP at Virginia Highlands Community College.  Underneath that title is STAR – Successful Techniques for Advising.  If you click on STAR you will immediately see a link to the PeopleSoft Version 8.9 for Advising.
