The Division of Business, Humanities and Social Sciences (BHSS) is a comprehensive academic organization offering majors for transfer into baccalaureate programs and  occupational technical programs in business and public services.  Students who are not sure of their career path can complete the general education core requirements at VHCC that first and second year students complete at four-year institutions. The Liberal Arts major allows students to  transfer to a four-year college ready to declare a major and begin third year enrollment. Students who know they will be business majors at a four year institution should select Business Administration as their major at VHCC.  Education is designed for teacher preparation, for students in the Arts, Humanities and/or Social Sciences and all pre-professional areas.

The Business Technology majors are primarily designed to provide students with workplace skills they can market immediately upon completion of the certificate or degree program.  For example, the Accounting major is designed to teach accounting skills that students can use in the workplace at the completion of their program.  Nevertheless, students sometimes choose to get both the workplace skills and prepare for a four-year degree. Information Systems Technology majors  have articulated transfer to Radford University’s IT majors.  All technology programs can be modified to accommodate students’ academic and career plans. We also offer Administrative Support Technology programs in legal assisting and medical office in addition to exciting career preparation in Management and Hospitality and Tourism.

Students seeking majors in the helping professions can select options in transfer as mentioned above (Education or Liberal Arts) but also Human Services applied degrees and certificates for students interested in careers in the broad range of social services fields.

For students who need to return to the workplace in a quick turn around time, we offer Certificate programs  (one-year) in Accounting/Information Systems, Clerical Studies, Early Childhood Teaching Assistant, Health Information Technology (insurance coding). Hospitality and Tourism, Human Services AdvocateNetworking , Supervision and Management  and  Web Design .

Students should meet with the faculty advisor in their major or contact our division counselor liaison, Tim Harrison, at tharrison@vhcc.edu for further information.
