variety of technical work in support of the recreation program. Manages
intensive use recreation areas with campgrounds and day use sites (both
developed and dispersed) and recreation residences. Applies conventional
technical and administrative solutions to a variety of
recreation-related problems, such as site care and maintenance and
recreation resource protection. Coordinates with other forest personnel,
such as the Recreation/Lands Staff Officer, to develop an overall
Recreation Plan for developed and dispersed recreation sites. For
example, participates in the development of plans for recreation area
maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction projects
in accordance with program management objectives and policies.
Recommends settings for a variety of proposed recreation facilities and
provides information about the characteristics of each area.
Participates in the implementation of recreation operation and
maintenance plans for developed and dispersed recreation sites. Takes
independent action to correct items within the scope of the approved
operating plans. Recommends measures to improve the administration of
recreation programs. Gathers data for project proposals, reports,
surveys, and other needs by making on-the-ground field inventories, use
counts, time studies, etc. Compiles data and recommends a course of
action or placement of facilities. Defines data needed to monitor and
assess recreation conditions. Provides public information and
interpretive services. Provides liaison with community organizations and
interest groups to stimulate interest in and utilization of forest
recreation facilities. Determines and recommends opportunities for
community members to participate in programs and activities. Coordinates
group visits with operational personnel and communicates schedules and
requirements for logistical support. Recruits and trains volunteers.
Cleans both roadside and backcountry dispersed sites. Naturalizes sites
where necessary in order to control use and prevent resource damage.
Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory
signs and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel
management and safety. Work is accomplished outdoors in all kinds of

Gypsy Moth Trapping - Seasonal employment opportunity, 2 positions
available. Duties include conducting quality control (QC) trap
inspections (often in rugged terrain and during inclement weather) of at
least 10% of all gypsy moth traps placed by contractors in southwestern
Virginia (Christiansburg to Abingdon and Clintwood) with occasional
travel to south central and eastern trapping areas. Trap inspections
will be conducted during initial trap placement, midseason inspections,
and after traps have been removed from the sites. Items to be checked
include, but are not limited to, trap placement, trap construction and
data recorded on the trap. QC inspections will be recorded in a GPS
(Global Positioning System) hand held unit. Inspector is expected to
troubleshoot problems as needed. Trap inspections will require hiking in
rough terrain to remote trap sites and driving 4-Wheel Drive vehicles.
QC inspectors may be required to place, perform midseason inspections,
and final inspections/pulls for trapping areas not awarded to a

point will be their home.
Inspectors must reside in close proximity to their work area. Inspectors
will report to the Christiansburg Office as needed. Office
responsibilities include, but are not limited to, downloading trappers’
GPS units, screen GPS data for errors, transferring data to VA Tech via
the Internet, obtaining and using quality control trapping reports from
the STS website, planning tasks, responding to trappers’ concerns,
inquiries and requests, and replacement of broken/defective equipment.
Inspectors will be required to review contractors’ invoices for errors.
Requires: Proven ability to follow instructions, work independently,
make decisions, organize work and interact effectively with the
contractors/trappers and general public. Good oral and written
communication skills are necessary. Computer experience required,
preferably with programs such as Word and Excel. Familiarity with a GPS
unit is desired. This position is physically demanding and involves
considerable walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, driving for long
periods, and exposure to outside weather conditions, natural elements,
and rugged terrain. A valid driver’s license is required (use of
personal vehicle may be required if a state vehicle is not available).
Some overnight travel may be required. The seasonal employment period is
April through September. Consideration will be made for students
delaying their starting dates to May and ending employments dates in
August. These are wage positions restricted to 1,500 hours per year and
have no state benefits. Employment in each position is anticipated to
be a maximum of 760 hours. Regular work hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00
PM, Monday through Friday. Inspectors are expected to work a 40-hour

minimum: $13.61/hr Performs those duties necessary to compound
batches of various products in accordance with approved production cards
and appropriate operating procedures. Cleans and/or inspects for
cleanliness and documents into log book the equipment and containers to
be used for batchmixing in accordance with approved methods. Identifies,
verifies and documents the approved ingredients to be weighed for the
batch. Weighs using the metric system and/or verifies, and documents the
previously weighed ingredients for the batch into the proper blender and
blends according to approved procedures and methods. Calculates active
and inactive ingredients, depending on varying potencies in accordance
with batch records. Charges and/or verifies and documents the previously
weighed ingredients for the batch into the proper blender and blends
according to approved instructions. Discharges the blend into
appropriate clean containers, and transports the containers of the blend
to the proper storage area. Uses proper methods to inspect and/or clean
equipment to be used on blends requiring compaction and milling and
documents usage into logbooks prior to further processing. Perform and
is proficient in SAP transactions and in Mettler Freeweigh. Sets up
compaction, milling and classifying equipment according to standard
product guidelines. Operates the compaction, milling and classifying
equipment in accordance with proper operating and adjustment procedures
to produce blend granulation that meets standard product guidelines.
Collects the blend granulation into appropriate clean containers that
are properly labeled and places them into storage. Cleans, inspects,
verifies, and documents the cleaning of equipment and containers as
required according to approved methods and procedures. Performs
reconciliation of blends according to approved instructions and methods
at each step of the process as required by the batch or blend Standard
Operating Instructions. Verifies and documents calculations performed by
other batchmixers. Assists on other jobs as assigned by supervisors.
Cross-trains as required to pull in-process samples for submission to
QA, capsule machine operations, and production area cleaning functions.
Cross-trains as required to assist with coating process. Cross-trains as
required to perform as a “loan-out” in other departments (i.e.
Packaging). Basic Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to read and comprehend cGMP's, LSOP’s, DOP’s, and batchmixing
