Preliminary Information about the Course

You will receive a detailed Distance Learning Guide at the class meeting. Some of the information is repeated below. More details will be given at the meeting.

This course is intended to give you experience with many different facets of computing. You will be learning computer concepts by studying the textbook. There are several interactive components that will help you learn the material, but since you won't be attending traditional lectures, you will need to read the chapters very closely.

In addition to studying computer concepts ranging from buying a computer to the latest Web technologies, you will also complete several labs. The text comes with a Book-on-CD that has several excellent labs. We will also be using some other software that requires that you have access to the Internet.

If you have trouble with your home computer or have a slow Internet connection, you can always use the computers located in the Learning Lab on campus for this portion of the course. Please note that you are responsible for troubleshooting home computer problems. The publishers of your textbook will provide Tech Support for their software, but if you can't get the problem fixed in a timely manner you will need to schedule some time to come to campus to work on the computers that have all the software installed and working.

We will use Blackboard and e-mail to communicate in this course. Blackboard is an e-learning tool that you access through the Internet. The instructor will post all your assignments, due dates, and other information on the Blackboard site. You will be given account information and a demonstration of Blackboard's features at the August 25th meeting.

You will be required to take four proctored tests. This means that they must be taken on campus. The tests will be administered in room 723 at 8:00 am. The test dates will be available in your Distance Learning Guide.

If you are unable to take the test at the scheduled time, you will need to arrange an alternate schedule with your instructor. The tests must be taken during the same week that the test is scheduled (usually on either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday). The instructor will take "reservations" for your testing time a few weeks before the first test.

If you do not show up for a test and do not contact the instructor immediately (on the day of the test), you may be withdrawn from the course. The Admissions/Financial Aid office asks all instructors to withdraw students that are "not attending". In a distance learning class, this means students that are not submitting their work and not showing up for tests. Please be aware of this policy!

If you have any questions, my contact information is available using the appropriate button on the left. I'm looking forward to working with you during Fall semester!
