  3. Attend the only mandatory class meeting on Monday, August 25th Wednesday, August 27th at 8:00 am in room LRC-733.

Preliminary Information about the Course

You will receive a detailed Distance Learning Guide at the class meeting. Some of the information is repeated below. More details will be given at the meeting.

This course is a practical, hands-on course with lots of project work. It lends itself well to the distance learning approach since the best way to learn this material is to practice with it. Your book will include tutorials to teach you the basics as well as more advanced projects to show you how Office is used in the business world. Your instructor will be available (via e-mail, phone, or face-to-face appointments) to help you with your projects.

We will cover the Windows operating system, Excel 2007, Word 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and Access 2007. You will need to have access to this software. Any recent version of Windows will work (XP or Vista). For the application software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access), you need the 2007 versions which are part of the Office 2007 Professional suite. Note: Access is not included as part of the Standard suite. You must have Office 2007 Professional or Ultimate to get all four programs.

If you don't have Office 2007, Microsoft is offering a special promotion at www.theultimatesteal.com just for students, but you have to act fast. This promotion ends April 30th, 2008. (Maybe they will extend it--I have know way of knowing at this point.)

If you don't have the right software, you can always use the computers in the Learning Lab to complete your work. Just make sure to budget some time to be on campus for this purpose.

We will use Blackboard and e-mail to communicate in this course. Blackboard is an e-learning tool that you access through the Internet. The instructor will post all your assignments, due dates, and other information on the Blackboard site. You will be given account information and a demonstration of Blackboard's features at the August 27th meeting.

You will be required to take four proctored tests. This means that they must be taken on campus. The tests will be administered in room 733 at 8:00 am. The test dates will be available in your Distance Learning Guide.

If you are unable to take the test at the scheduled time, you will need to arrange an alternate schedule with your instructor. The tests must be taken on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday during the same week that the test is scheduled. The instructor will take "reservations" for your testing time a few weeks before the first test.

If you do not show up for a test and do not contact the instructor immediately (on the day of the test), you may be withdrawn from the course. The Admissions/Financial Aid office asks all instructors to withdraw students that are "not attending". In a distance learning class, this means students that are not submitting their work and not showing up for tests. Please be aware of this policy!

If you have any questions, be sure to e-mail or call. Contact information is available using the appropriate button on the left. I'm looking forward to working with you during Fall semester!
