This year’s symposium will focus on emotional intelligence and mental health issues

Keynote Address
Speaker Jill Lemons Doty
The Forgotten Education

Jill Lemons Doty has worked with countless students and educators over the years. From the beginning of her career in 1982, her passion for teaching to the whole person, with the primary emphasis on teaching skills that promote emotional intelligence, has been evident.

While in graduate school Jill taught an undergraduate counseling skills course and went on to develop and teach a graduate level course for educators for the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. She has worked in elementary, middle, and high schools as a counselor, further realizing her beliefs in addressing the emotional connections to the learning environment. Jill has also broadened the landscape of education through the various workshops, trainings, and lectures she has led during her career. The Children Left Behind

Now, in her educational memoir, The Children Left Behind, she highlights the importance of understanding why educational reform must encompass more than government standards and test scores in preparing our students to be productive members of society. The true, often heart breaking stories of students Jill has worked with over the years help to explain the need to encompass emotional literacy as the foundation of all learning environments.
