Congratulations on your accomplishment! The commencement ceremony is specifically designed to honor you. In order to ensure it proceeds smoothly and is an occasion to remember, please review the following information.
Please note: Seating in the Grand Hall is limited and will be assigned to guests as they arrive. Those who would like to be seated together should wait until all members of their party have arrived. When all seats in the Grand Hall have been filled, overflow rooms located in the Higher Education Center and within VHCC facilities will be opened for seating. The ceremony can be viewed on television screens located in these rooms. Please inform your guests that it may be necessary to seat them in overflow rooms in order to comply with all applicable safety regulations.
The ceremony begins with a Greeting, Commencement Address, and Presentation of the Distinguished Service and Alumni Awards. Following these events, the VHCC Choir will sing “Virginia Highlands Pride.” The words are printed in the program so that you may sing with the choir.
The Vice President will then alert the graduates to prepare to stand with this announcement:
“Will the graduates for degrees, diplomas, and certificates please rise and come forward for the presentation and conferring ceremonies?”
Each row will rise in unison, move forward, and line up at the right side of the stage. Graduates should proceed across the stage as their names are called, stopping to receive thier diploma and shake hands with the president. Graduates will exit the stage on the left, return to their seats and remain standing. Once all graduates in a row have returned to their seats, the entire row will be seated in unison.
When all graduates have received their diplomas and have been seated, including the Student Marshal, the Vice President will cue the graduates to rise in unison with the following statement: “Will the candidates for graduation please rise and remain standing?”
The president will confer degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
Students will change their tassels from the right sight of their caps to the left side, signifying graduation. The Student Marshal then comes forward to lead the graduates, who will rise in unison and exit the auditorium. Please proceed out of the auditorium and down the hallway past the stairway to allow other members of the audience to safely exit.Please ask your family members and guests to remain in the Grand Hall until the Recessional has ended.
