Project EXCEL provides a variety of services to eligible students with the goal of enhancing his/her success at completing degree requirements, graduating from Virginia Highlands Community College, and transfer to a four-year college or university. Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Students who have a documented disability may request accommodations through the College's guidelines for instructional accommodations. (Documents to be linked here soon). Counseling The professional staff in Project EXCEL provides three types of counseling services. Personal counseling assists participants with overcoming and making life changes in personal issues that interfere with his/her daily living. Career counseling assists participants with setting realistic expectations and bench marks regarding his/her academic and employment goals. Transfer counseling assists participants in planning for and progressing through curricula with the goal of transferring to a four-year institution. On-going advisement and guidance ensures that a students' credits transfer to the senior institution.
Cultural Enrichment During the year, EXCEL arranges cultural enrichment activities for participants to attend. These activities include on-campus events as well as field trips to local cultural programs. The goal of this service is the expand students' awareness and sensitivity for diverse cultures and an appreciation for art, literature and historical heritage.
Tutoring Students who are having academic difficulty in one or more subjects may request tutoring. The tutor coordinator works with students individually to place them with a tutor that is qualified to tutor in the problem area. Tutoring is available Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. After-hour tutoring is available as needed. Workshops Throughout the year, EXCEL offers workshops that support participants academic and personal growth and success.
