Tutoring
Challenging courses don’t have to stand in the way of academic success, thanks to the VHCC Tutoring Center and its qualified staff. Designed for motivated students who can use a little individualized attention, the Tutoring Center provides free help in just about every subject offered at VHCC. Students simply need to make an appointment with Tutor Coordinator Stacey Dorton and explain the level of help needed. She’s a master at matching each student with a qualified tutor who already has mastered the course. Drop-in tutoring is also widely available with no appointment required.

Academic Workshops
A variety of workshops that provide techniques and strategies for helping students succeed in college are offered throughout the year. Topics include study skills, test anxiety, transfer preparation, time management, financial literacy, wellness and stress management. These are offered online through Blackboard and through face-to-face sessions on campus during the Fall and Spring Semesters.

Grant Aid
The Excel Center offers grant aid to participants who are actively involved in program activities, maintain passing grades, and receive Federal Pell Grants. Grant aid typically is provided during the fall semester, although limited funds may also be available in the spring. Grant aid is a financial resource allocated directly to students to help
offset college expenses.

Academic Counseling/Advising
Because The Excel Center is committed to the success of every student, free counseling is an important component of the program. Academic counseling assists students in developing strategies for success. Transfer counseling is also available to ensure students plan ahead, choosing a program of study and courses that will allow them to transfer to a four-year institution and complete a bachelor’s degree. Together, these counseling services ensure students have the support necessary to complete their VHCC education and make a smooth transition to a senior college or university.
