A 5K run that will leave participants covered in a rainbow of colors will be held this summer at Virginia Highlands Community College.
“These types of events have become really popular in big cities and this is our version of that,” said Dexter Minton, president of the VHCC Student Government Association. “There will be several points along the cross-campus course where volunteers will throw colored powder onto the runners. It’s really just a way to add a little extra fun to the run.”
Modeled after The Color Run™, a national event designed to promote healthy living, the Color Xtreme 5K Fun Run at VHCC will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. The colored powder is a harmless mixture of cornstarch and food coloring that will leave participants covered in color at the finish line, Minton said. The race will be timed for those interested in competing, but participants of all ages and ability levels are invited to run or walk at their own pace, he added.
The event is being sponsored by the VHCC SGA, and all proceeds will support a new scholarship program for second-year students at VHCC who exhibit outstanding leadership abilities. Registration is $20 in advance (before Aug. 9) and $25 after that. Teams of seven may participate for $100.
