At VHCC, we are committed to providing our students with an advising experience that will strengthen the relationship between the student and the VHCC community. Effective advising will enable students to achieve their educational and career goals. To assist students in meeting their goals, VHCC counselors and faculty advisors have adopted the developmental model of advising. This model of advising seeks to integrate the student’s personal needs, academic requirements, and career goals.
Counselors and Advisors
VHCC students have the benefit of two valuable resources to help them in planning their academic, career and transfer goals.
Academic counselors in Student Services assist students during the enrollment process through a Transition Session, approve curriculum and advisor changes, counsel students who have academic or personal difficulties or have been referred by instructors through SAILS, and provide referrals to other campus and community resources.
Faculty advisors are assigned to students based on their program of study to share their knowledge and experience. A faculty advisor helps students through the exploration of career and academic goals and assists students in choosing and scheduling appropriate classes to meet those goals. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their faculty advisor prior to scheduling classes each semester (this meeting is required for students who have completed less than 30 credit hours - see Mandatory Advising) in order to ensure students are enrolling in the right classes for their curriculum and possible transfer plans.
Faculty Advisor Lists
All students at VHCC are assigned a faculty advisor who is available to provide educational guidance.
VHCC students enrolling for the first time should follow the Enrollment Checklist to ensure they have completed all necessary steps.
Transition sessions are required for all new students and those who have not attended VHCC for at least three years. During the transition session, the division counselor will provide valuable information about the college, explain the enrollment process, interpret COMPASS placement scores, and discuss program requirements. Students also will be able to build a class schedule and enroll during the Transition Session.
Curricular students are required to complete the VPT Placement Test, which determines the proper placement in reading, writing and math classes. Students may be exempt from placement testing if they have taken the SAT or ACT test within the last three years. Division counselors can provide additional information about placement testing. The Online Preview is designed to provide information about campus resources, locations, people, and curriculum. Students should complete the online preview before enrolling in classes. The preview, which includes questions, takes about 25 minutes to complete.
Beginning in Spring Semester 2009, all VHCC students who have completed less than 25 credit hours (excluding developmental classes) are required to meet with their faculty advisor prior to enrolling for the next semester. This policy was instituted to ensure students receive the proper academic advice and take the classes needed for their curriculum and transfer plans. Even after students have exceeded the 25-credit mark, they are encouraged to continue meeting with their academic advisor each semester.
SAILS is a web-based student referral system. It is used by faculty to seek assistance for students who display behaviors that can inhibit academic success, such as missed assignments, poor performance on assignments or tests, erratic attendance, excessive tardiness, and inappropriate behavior in class. Students who are referred through the SAILS system will be notified by mail and email. They will be required to make an appointment with their division counselor to discuss the alert.
