Molly Barker

Molly Barker founded Girls on the Run in 1996 in Charlotte, NCMolly Barker. A four-time Hawaii Ironman triathlete, she used her background in social work, counseling and teaching, along with research on adolescent issues, to develop the program. Today, there are Girls on the Run councils in over 190 cities across North America serving over 150,000 girls and women each year, and Molly has become a globally recognized leader in girl’s education and development.

The “Girl Box,” a phrase coined by Molly, describes the imaginary place many girls go around adolescence, where cultural and societal stereotypes limit choices and opportunities. Starting with this strong foundation, Molly’s idea is to strategically launch a variety of targeted and innovative social media and curriculum-driven projects to create a social movement, which provides girls and women with the tools and the courage to see, unravel from, and eliminate their own and often unconscious buy-in to the Girl Box and its limiting messages.

Molly is a positive role model for girls and women of all ages. She enjoys writing, running, and yoga.

Jennifer Messer

Jennifer Messer attributes her weight gain to the “mindless and emotional eating that comes with a busy life.”She says, “I lost sight of me and focused on my other titles instead – wife, Mom, volunteer, etc.”

Jennifer MesserJennifer was the youngest of three growing up in Abingdon and played volleyball in high school. She got her degree in accounting from Virginia Highlands Community College.

The weight gain began after high school, but she has struggled the most with her weight in the past five years. Now the married mother of two daughters, ages 10 and 14, 43-year-old Jennifer weighed 266 pounds and lost 104 pounds while on the hit TV show “The Biggest Loser”. She decided she had to change her life while attending a memorial service for the athletic director of their local high school, who died at the age of 44.

Jennifer says she wants to lose the weight so she can “live a more fulfilling life where my weight will no longer hold me back from doing anything that I want to do.” She looks forward to being a healthy role model for her daughters and also sharing her story with others.
