Location: Executive Auditorium Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center
In the decade before the Civil War, the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad brought changes to Southwest Virginia’s economy, increased its reliance on slavery, and tied the region politically to Richmond. When the war came, the railroad brought union raiders desperate to cut the Confederacy’s major east-west connector. Highlighting the raids of 1863, Noe will provide an overview of the sectional crisis in Southwest Virginia.
