April Fool’s Day, 1863, one day before the infamous “Bread Riot” in Richmond, brought a large snowfall to Abingdon. The frigid temperatures quickly warmed as the area received its first major war scare, when a report of 2,500 Federal soldiers on their way to the saltworks alarmed the local citizenry. Although no large-scale battles occurred on Washington County soil, the area became a key supply zone for Confederate armies, resulting in several Northern efforts to secure the region’s vital resources.
