The following steps should be taken when dealing with suspicious mail or packages:

  1. Do not shake, open, move, or empty the contents of any suspicious envelope or package.
  2. Notify Campus Police immediately (739-2448 or 9 614-8282) or Buildings & Grounds (739-2510 or 9 614-8383) after hours and on weekends.
  3. Place the envelope or package in a plastic bag or some other type of container to prevent leakage of contents.
  4. If you do not have a container, cover the envelope or package with anything (e.g., clothing, paper, trash can, etc.) and do not remove this cover.
  5. Leave the room and close the door or section off the area to prevent others from entering.
  6. Wash your hands with soap and water to prevent spreading contaminants to your face.
  7. Turn off fans or ventilation units in the area.

Compile a list of everyone who was in the room or area when this suspicious letter or package was discovered. Give this list to Campus Police for follow-up investigations and advice.
