Virginia Highlands Community College does not provide mental health services (per VCCS policy), but does provide faculty, staff and students with appropriate referral options.
VHCC has established a partnership with the local service board, Highlands Community Services (HCS), to provide quick and efficient mental health services to VHCC students. Highlands Community Services provides services for students with mental health concerns that warrant immediate and ongoing treatment.
Karen Copenhaver serves as the college’s liaison to Highlands Community Services and can initiate the referral to HCS. Faculty may contact Karen Copenhaver (ISC 124 , (276)793-2404; firstname.lastname@example.org) or Beth Page (OTC 206, (276)793-2506; email@example.com) with student concerns.
If the concern for the student is critical, contact Campus Police in ISC 100B or (276) 619-8282. The student should go (or be taken) to the emergency department at the nearest hospital or call the Highlands Community Services Access line at (276) 628-5067 and inform the operator that there is a crisis.
