Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Horticulture or related field with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Horticulture from a regionally-accredited institution preferred; Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or a related field with completion of master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in horticulture no later than August 16, 2017 required.
  • Occupational experience in horticulture or a related field preferred.
  • Successful teaching experience at the community college level preferred.
  • Curriculum development experience preferred.
  • Commitment to developing and teach courses through distance learning modalities preferred.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication in the English language required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and belief in the comprehensive mission of community colleges required.

Responsibilities:
  • Teach day and evening classes in horticulture at on- and off-campus locations.
  • Cultivate relationships with regional horticulture industry and transfer institutions.
  • Work with the Greenhouse Manager to ensure that the Treadwell-Jones Greenhouse is operated in manner consistent with its mission and serves as a laboratory for horticulture education.
  • Integrate technology in courses and the curriculum as appropriate.
  • Develop and teach new courses as necessary.
  • Develop and teach courses using distance learning media as appropriate.
  • Establish and assess student outcomes and participate in Institutional Effectiveness initiatives to include assessment and program reviews.
  • Maintain ten office hours per week with accessibility to students.
  • Advise students on curriculum and career goals.
  • Provide leadership and service on college committees.
  • Pursue professional growth and development activities in Horticulture.
  • Advance the college mission by involvement in college, community and professional activities that enhances the college and impact student development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Position Available: August 16, 2014. This is a full-time nine-month teaching position. Reappointment will be based on performance evaluations and institutional needs and is contingent on completing a master’s degree and 18 graduate semester hours in horticulture by August 16, 2017.

The College: Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) is a member of the Virginia Community College System and is located in historic Abingdon, Virginia. Abingdon is in far southwest Virginia, half-way between Roanoke, Virginia and Knoxville, Tennessee on Interstate 81, part of a metro area of 600,000. VHCC is accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges and serves the City of Bristol, Virginia; Washington County and the western portion of Smyth County. The college offers comprehensive instruction to more than 3,500 students in occupational-technical areas, college transfer programs, continuing education, developmental education, general education and specialized regional and community service areas.
