Part-time, hourly position with flexible schedule based on student’s class schedule. No fringe benefits.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing students in classroom, laboratories, and other required activities.
  • Reviews course schedules, syllabi, and textbooks to develop a general understanding of the lecture to be interpreted.
  • Develops specialized signs to communicate technical terms and concepts.
  • Collaborates with faculty, staff, and student to ensure proper services are provided.
  • Consults with supervisor and faculty in order to handle any problems or difficulties that arise.
  • Submits time records and other paper work in a timely and appropriate manner.

Qualifications: 

  • The qualified interpreter shall be one who holds at least one of the following three credentials: Certification from any national organization whose certification process has been recognized by the Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or A current screening level awarded by the Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Program of the Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or A screening level or recognized evaluation from any other state when 1) the credentials meet the minimum requirements of Virginia Quality Assurance Screening and 2) the credentials are valid and current in the state issued.
  • Has at least one year interpreting experience with student populations.
  • Demonstrates and understanding of deaf culture.
