Dr. Ron Proffitt, president of Virginia Highlands Community College, has announced plans to retire from the position he has held since 2010, effective June 30, 2014
“Serving as President of Virginia Highlands Community College has been a perfect capstone to my career in Higher Education,” he said. “It has been my privilege to serve the college and the community I have called home for almost 40 years. I have enjoyed a working career of 51 years that includes almost 39 years with Virginia’s Community Colleges. It just seems time for me to step aside. I am grateful to the faculty and staff, the Local Board, and the Chancellor for their unwavering support and the privilege of serving VHCC.”
Dr. Proffitt is the fifth president of VHCC. He began his career in education in 1975 when he was hired to develop a regional radiography program to serve Southwest Virginia, Virginia Highlands, Mountain Empire and Wytheville community colleges. He held this position until 2000 when he was appointed Dean of Math, Science and Health Technology at Southwest Virginia Community College. In 2007, he was named Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Wytheville Community College and remained in that role until he joined VHCC three years later.
Dr. Proffitt credits the faculty, staff and administrators at VHCC with the progress the college has made during his tenure.
“There is no doubt in my mind that an institution led by quality, committed individuals is the key to success,” he said. “VHCC has those individuals, and I’m confident they will continue to lead the institution to greater achievements in the future.”
In addition to his leadership role at VHCC, Dr. Proffitt is actively involved in the Abingdon Kiwanis Club and the Smyth County, Washington County, and Bristol Chambers of Commerce. He also led a group of educators and civic leaders recently in exploring the feasibility of a workforce center in the region.
“Ron Proffitt has been a hardworking advocate for the community college mission throughout his long and dedicated career,” said Dr. Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges. “We are grateful for his many accomplishments and passionate service to the students and employers we serve – and we wish him nothing but the best in a well-earned retirement.”
The nationwide search for a new VHCC president will begin this fall and will be led by a committee appointed by the chancellor. The search committee will make its recommendation to Dr. DuBois based upon interviews and input gathered from the search committee, the VHCC Local Board, and the campus community.
