Specialization in Early Childhood Education

Length: Four semesters (two years)
Purpose: The program in Early Childhood Development is designed to provide students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge related to the care, development and guidance of young children. The curriculum addresses the intellectual, social, physical, emotional, and creative growth of young children.

Admission Requirements:
A student eligible for admission to the college can normally be considered for admission to the Human Services Specialization in Early Childhood Education Associate Degree curriculum. Proficiency in high school English and mathematics is required. Students who are not proficient in English and mathematics will be required to correct their deficiencies in developmental courses.Program Requirements:
The Human Services Specialization in Early Childhood Education curriculum consists of courses in psychology, sociology, public services, and human services. In addition to these core courses, other courses in general education and related areas are included. Instruction will include both a specialized as well as a general education approach. Upon completion of the four-semester program, the student is awarded the Associate in Applied Science in Human Services Specialization in Early Childhood EducationStudents who wish to transfer to four-year institutions are advised to acquaint themselves with the requirements of the major department in the college to which transfer is considered.
The listed sequence of courses may be modified when necessary. Please refer to the Program Choices section of this Catalog for a discussion of factors which affect planning and sequencing programs of study.

Notes on Human Services: Early Childhood Education:
Students are urged to acquaint themselves with the requirements of the major department in the college or university to which transfer is contemplated.
1. Students may substitute the SOC 201-202 sequence for PSY 201-202.
2. Students may substitute any HLT (Health) course for Physical Education requirement. Transfer students should note that four-year institutions may require a PED activity course in the general education core.
3. Students wishing to transfer are advised to substitute MTH 163 for this course.
4. Keyboarding skills are highly recommended.
5. Recommended degree related electives include HMS 197, 297; HLT 110, 121, AST141*; SOC 235, 236.
6. Humanities electives include ART 201, 202: foreign languages; literature; MUS 121, 122; PHI 101; REL 200, 210, 230; SPD 130, 151, 152.
