Hello! My name is Schéry Collins.
I have been a professor of mathematics at
Virginia Highlands community College since the
seventies when I graduated from ETSU's master's
degree program.
I come from a long line of college
professors. Both of my parents taught at ETSU
before they retired, and my grandfather taught
mathematics at Milligan College for fifty years.
Virginia Highlands--all of its employees and
students are like a second family to me. I
believe it's a great place to go to school--wonderful
faculty, super support staff, helpful administration,
and a beautiful campus surrounded by the
gorgeous mountains of Southwest Virginia. VHCC
has made so many advances in program choices and
technology since it opened its doors in 1969.
In addition to teaching, I am very involved in the
world of music. After being the the organist at
St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Abingdon for
twenty-eight years, I am also now the choir director
there. I play principal flute in the Symphony of the Mountains
,the Johnson City Symphony and founded the Highlands Chamber
Trio which performs for weddings, dinners, parties,
and other special events.
For fun, I love to stay active--outdoors or in. I
play tennis daily, ride bikes on the Creeper Trail, kayak,
cross-country ski, and show shoe.
My husband, David, teaches economics at
VHCC. We have five children, but they've all
flown the coop. We stay very busy so we won't
suffer ill effects from the "empty nest"
syndrome.
Students, come and visit me anytime you're
free. I have taught as an adjunct faculty at
Virginia Intermont College, Emory and Henry College,
ETSU, and U Va and am familiar with programs at other
colleges. If I can't help you plan your future
college career, I will definitely point you in the
right direction.
