Marsh Regional Blood Center Provides VHCC Scholarships

Post Date:06/13/2018 3:30 AM

Three Virginia Highlands Community College students who have been active blood donors will receive scholarships this fall from Marsh Regional Blood Center.

David Brock, a Bristol resident who is enrolled in the Precision Machining Program at VHCC, will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Marsh. The College qualified for this scholarship because of its “outstanding performance’ during a recent series of on-campus blood drives, said Donor Services Recruiter Connie Denton. All VHCC student donors were entered to win, she said.

Additionally, Leah and Linsey Cullp will each receive a $500 scholarship to VHCC for their leadership in organizing a blood drive at Holston High School earlier this spring. The twins graduated from HHS in May and will be attending VHCC this fall.

Denton said the scholarship funds are raised through a community golf tournament held each April. The scholarships allow Marsh to support local high school and college students, who are responsible for donating about 30 percent of all blood collected in our region, and provide incentives for young people to donate. Marsh recently awarded $20,000 in scholarships to local students, she added.

Denton presented the scholarship checks to VHCC leaders on Wednesday.

The next VHCC Blood Drive is set for Tuesday, June 26, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Community members can assist VHCC in qualifying for scholarships by donating on campus. You may pre-register by contacting Ben King at Walk-ins are also welcome, and guests are asked to report to the Collins Student Center to register.
