Evening Drone Class Begins Nov. 26

Post Date:10/15/2018 8:34 AM

Students are currently being accepted for a non-credit course at Virginia Highlands Community College that will be offered evenings in November to prepare participants to become licensed as a commercial drone pilot.

The Remote Pilot Airman course will be taught by Tamara Lasley and Dr. Kevin Hamed, licensed Unmanned Air System (UAS) pilots, on the VHCC campus. The class will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday & Wednesday, Nov. 26 & 28 and Dec. 3 & 5. The cost of the course is $216, but Virginia residents may qualify for a tuition discount. There is an additional cost of $150 to take the pilot’s licensure exam, but those who pass this test may be eligible for reimbursement. Discounts and reimbursement are contingent upon the availability of funds.

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), commonly called drones, have a wide variety of uses in professions such as real estate, farming, photography, construction, emergency services and more.  Flying a drone for any non-recreational purpose requires a license from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The course includes classroom lectures, some out-of-class online assignments, and hands-on test flight sessions using VHCC equipment to allow students to develop flying experience.

Students may register online at www.vhcc.edu/workforce.  For additional information or registration assistance, please call The Division of Workforce Development & Continuing Education at (276) 739-2430.

This course is offered through FastForward, an initiative of Virginia’s Community Colleges designed to provide short-term training programs that lead to high-demand career opportunities.
