Music Careers Series:  It’s Hammer Time! The Engineering inside the Piano

Local piano technician Brian Wilson will demonstrate how the key action of a grand piano works to facilitate music making at the hands of a pianist. He will remove the keyboard from the piano and show audience members the incredibly intricate mechanisms by which the hammers work, and what might need repairing when they don’t work. He will also discuss the physics of tuning and how the piano is engineered to withstand the approximately 35,000 pounds of pressure of the piano strings.
