Dr. John Lentz, DDS Honored with Chancellor’s Award for Philanthropic Leadership

The Virginia Foundation for Community College Education (VFCCE) recently celebrated its 20th Annual Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy Luncheon, recognizing outstanding individuals and organizations whose generosity strengthens Virginia’s community colleges. Among this year’s distinguished honorees is Dr. John Lentz, DDS, selected as the recipient representing Virginia Highlands Community College.

The event brought together more than 200 guests and honored over two dozen individuals, families, and businesses affiliated with all 23 of Virginia’s community colleges, as well as the VFCCE itself. Each award recipient was nominated in recognition of their exceptional commitment to advancing student success and supporting the growth and development of their local college and foundation.

Dr. Lentz was recognized for his steadfast dedication to Virginia Highlands Community College and its students. Through his philanthropic leadership and community engagement, he has helped expand educational opportunities and remove barriers for students striving to achieve their academic and career goals.

In his welcoming remarks, Chancellor David Doré praised the collective impact of this year’s honorees, noting that they represent an extraordinary $27 million in lifetime giving to Virginia’s community colleges. “The individuals and organizations we honor in this room represent an extraordinary commitment to students whose potential might otherwise go unrealized,” he said.

Secretary of Education Jeffery Smith echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the vital role of philanthropy in opening doors for students across the Commonwealth. “Every Virginian deserves a pathway to economic opportunity,” he said.

The luncheon also featured a keynote address by author, philanthropist, and educator Brent L. Kendrick, Ph.D., whose career reflects a lifelong dedication to teaching and community college education.

Dr. Lentz’s recognition highlights the powerful impact of local leadership and generosity in transforming lives through education. His contributions exemplify the spirit of the Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy and underscore the importance of community support in building a brighter future for Virginia’s students.
