When Abingdon resident Sloan Lambert was laid off from Sandvik, he decided to take the opportunity to go to college in hopes of finding a higher paying job. What he found at Virginia Highlands turned out to be better than he could have imagined.
While he was initially nervous to return to school as an adult, Sloan found a welcoming community of professors eager to help him on his journey. “They really go that extra mile to see you succeed,” Sloan said of the faculty and staff at VHCC.
Sloan pursued his degree in Business Management, where he got the opportunity to learn real-world skills from skilled professors. “Each professor at Virginia Highlands Community College helps to prepare each student by leading and guiding in their own individual way of teaching,” said Sloan. His success didn’t stop in the classroom. While enrolled, Sloan found a great part-time job utilizing his new skills. He was even selected to give the commencement speech at his graduation.
Today, Sloan works as a Quality/Safety manager for XCAL Tools in Bristol. He is endlessly thankful for the skills he acquired and the connections he made during his tenure at the college. His professors and VHCC staff members still check on him frequently to see how he’s doing. He is forever thankful for his decision to attend VHCC.
