If you are an academically motivated junior or senior at Abingdon, Holston, John Battle, Patrick Henry, Chilhowie, Northwood, or Virginia High Schools, you could be eligible to earn FREE college credits by participating in VHCC’s Governor’s School!

There are limited spaces in the program, so apply now! Competitive admission is based on academic performance and a selection process by the high school principals and guidance counselors.

INTRO TO THEATRE

VHCC Governor's SchoolCST 130 (3 CREDITS)

Participants will learn the principles of drama by getting acquainted to various types of theatre presentations, developing theatre productions, participating in acting and improvisation workshops, and visiting Barter Theatre to take in a play and get a behind-the-scenes to look at the various aspects of a live theater production.

HEALTH CAREERS EXPLORATION

VHCC Governor's SchoolHLT 105, HLT 140, NUR 135 (4 CREDITS)

Participants will receive training in coordinated mouth-to-mouth artificial ventilation and chest compression, choking, life-threatening emergencies and sudden illness with the opportunity to earn certification from AHA in BLS for health care providers (CPR and AED); Explore the interrelated roles and functions of various members of the health team; Focus on medication dosage calculation for adult and pediatric clients; and Focuses on apothecary, metric, household conversion in medication dosage calculation for adult and pediatric clients. Provides a practical approach to learning to calculate and prepare medications and solutions. Includes calculating intravenous flow rates.

Students will earn college credit in each of the following courses:

  • HLT 105 (1 Credit) - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
    Provides training in coordinated mouth-to-mouth artificial ventilation and chest compression, choking, life-threatening emergencies and sudden illness.
     
  • HLT 140 (1 Credit) - Orientation to Health Professions
    Explores the interrelated roles and functions of various members of the
    health team.
     
  • NUR 135 (2 Credit) - Drug Dosage Calculations
    Focuses on apothecary, metric, household conversion in medication
    dosage calculation for adult and pediatric clients. Provides a practical
    approach to learning to calculate and prepare medications and solutions.
    Includes calculating intravenous flow rates.
