Clinical Requirements

Clinical requirements must be completed in ViewPoint Screening (except HIPAA, Hepatitis B for Track 1 & 3 and flu vaccinations) before students can be enrolled in nursing courses.

Students with incomplete requirements at the time of clinical activities will not be allowed to participate in clinicals, and therefore may not be able to complete the program.

Students must submit documentation early in order to have time to correct any possible issues.  All requirements are uploaded to your ViewPoint Screening account by the following deadlines:

Prior to Admission:

  Tracks 2, 3 and 4  June 1
  Track 1  August 1

Annual Update:

All tracks: August 1 unless notified by ViewPoint Screening of a different expiration date
Please note:  If documents are not completely filled out, they will be rejected by ViewPoint Screening.

CPR Certificate

Only American Heart Association, “Basic Life Support” for Healthcare Providers, certificate is accepted.  BLS certificate is for 2 years and should cover the entire period of enrollment in the nursing program.  A copy of your card, front and back is required and must be signed if a signature line is provided.  CPR classes may be offered at community colleges, hospitals or by contacting the American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org).

Please note: If your CPR class date is close to the submission deadline, your card may not be immediately available.  In this case, please request a dated note from your instructor saying that you passed the course, including the date of the course, and specifically stating the name of the course, American Heart Association BLS for HCP, with the instructor’s signature and title.  This note can be submitted to ViewPoint Screening and will be good for 60 days, which should be enough time to receive and upload your card.

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
HIPAA training is required of all nursing students. Your instructor will give details of completing this training during the first week of class.

An individual may be exempted from the immunization requirements only under the following circumstances:

  • Where a licensed physician provides documentation that the vaccination is contraindicated for one of the following reasons:
    • the individual meets the criteria for contraindication set forth in the manufacturer's vaccine package insert;
    • the individual meets the criteria for contraindication published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control of the ACIP;
    • or in the best professional judgment of the health care provider, based on the individual's medical condition and history, the risk or harm from the vaccine outweighs the potential benefit.
    • Such certification of medical exemption shall specify the nature and probable duration of the medical condition or circumstance that contraindicates immunization. An individual who has been exempted from a particular vaccination must comply with immunization requirements for any vaccines from which he/she has not been exempted.
    • An adult student can provide to the school a written statement, affirmed under penalties of perjury, that vaccination conflicts with the religious tenets and practices. Students must consult with the healthcare agencies prior to clinical rotations beginning to determine appropriate measures. Health care agencies have the right to stop a student from attending clinicals due to a lack of immunization

Tuberculosis (TB):

Upon admission to the nursing program, a 2 step tuberculosis testing (Tuberculin Skin Test [TST] purified protein derivative [PPD]) must be completed. The 2 step tests involves the following:

  • Step 1: a first visit to a health care provider in which PPD is injected into the forearm. Reading of results must occur between 48-72 hours after the injection.
    • Results:
      • Positive — consider TB infected, no second TST needed; evaluate for TB disease.*
      • Negative — a second TST is needed.
  • Step 2:  Retest in 1 to 3 weeks after first TST result is read.
    • Results:
      • Positive — consider TB infected, no second TST needed; evaluate for TB disease.*
      • Negative — obtain documentation of results and download to CastleBranch.
    • Annual screening and education of Tuberculosis will be completed. Complete the VHCC Nursing Student Tuberculosis screening form and follow directions. Complete the TB education via CDC and download certification of completion to CastleBranch.
